Kalgoorlie Desert Race

So I have a mate, who’s crazy enough to drive his Prado race truck around a 120km track 3 times in Kalgoorlie. So me being me and loving travelling with Mallow decided it was a good excuse to road trip it to Kalgoorlie to sightsee and watch the race. What a weekend!

I headed off at about 6.20am Thursday morning all loaded with gear, food, drinks and my swag for the weekend.

I stopped at Tammin roadhouse for a break and then kept going, arrived into Kal at 12.30pm, making great time!

Mallow went well and we didn’t fuel up once… Thank goodness for long range fuel tanks!!

Wow Kalgoorlie was definitely not what I expected and was so much bigger than I expected! The buildings are beautiful and old with a few newer ones thrown in.

Headed out to the track once I figured out where it was haha about 20mins out of town… Great spot and right on the start and finish line!

So I stayed at the track for Thursday night, simply set up with my swag and mozzie dome ha 😍

After brekky on Friday I had made the plans to sightsee the town and a few places and then head out to Lake Ballard where there are 52 statues on the lake as part of a art exhibition!

So Friday morning my first stop was the information centre to see what I could do for the day! The lady was super helpful and I headed out to the Super pit to start with and wow! I’ve never seen a mine before and this was amazing to see! Bloody huge!!

Second stop was the museum which was also pretty cool as you can take the lift to the top which is a mining thingy and look out over the town! Some of the items in the museum were very cool to see, alot of local history!

After this I went past the local brewery but sadly it wasn’t open yet (midday somewhere right) so I moved on to Mt Charlotte which is where the Mundaring pipeline finishes up… Massive huge tank at the top and you can see into the mine next door too!

Stopped for some lunch in the back of the car, thanks to my awesome set up!

Then it was time to head to Lake Ballard as I didn’t want to miss sunset or be setting up in the dark…. Made it in good time. Managed to take Mallow up to the top of snake Hill first to see the lake in full and wow was it a sight to see!!

Then it was down to the lake and it was much better set up than I thought! Picnic tables, fire pits and a drop toilet! Very cool! Sadly you can’t drive onto the lake so no pics of Mallow on the lake.

I took a wander out to the statues before the sun set, and boy were the flies friendly!!! Definitely take sturdy shoes with you when you do this exploring! Apparently most people don’t see all the statues and you can see why… They are spaced out and the lake goes on for miles, give or take the mirage!

The statues are amazing! And the shadows they cast are incredible!

And the flies didn’t let up… Till well after the sun had gone down… Even when I used my single awesome female skills to make a killer fire pit!! The smoke didn’t deter them as much as I’d hoped!

There was a couple of people around including a couple and a small dog about 100m away… This tiny doggo gave me the freight of my life when I was cooking dinner… He snuck to my camp… And crept under my cooking table without me hearing him and it made me JUMP!!! they apologised and said he could smell my food as he hadn’t had dinner yet! Hahaha

Had a great sleep… It was windy so made for a cooler night!

Had a quick wander back into the lake to see the shadows at sunrise before brekky and heading back to Kal as the flies were friendly again!!

Aaron did fantastic in his races and the weekend was great to watch! Took out first place for his race class! πŸ† We had a good support crew this weekend and being able to watch all the cars start and finish was awesome!

The facilities on offer were good!

I think I’ll need to rethink my set up for the next windy red dirt event as last night my swag was absolutely covered in red dirt… The mozzie dome may keep out insects but red dirt sure comes in!! Just meant I have some more cleaning to do now! Haha

All in all a wicked weekend with great friends and some new ones seeing somewhere new! 😊😊

The start line!
